The Urgent Problem

Untreated wastewater is a major contributor to child illness and deaths in India and globally, while also causing severe environmental damage. In India, a staggering 92% of wastewater remains untreated before being released back into the environment.

Globally, this figure is 80%. Traditional treatment methods often rely on energy-intensive aerobic bacteria-based sewage treatment plants (STPs), which frequently involve the use of coal and other components that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

Innovation Highlight

ECOSTP has developed a groundbreaking zero-power, zero-operator sewage treatment technology inspired by nature. The system is built on biomimicry principles, imitating the cow’s stomach with multiple chambers for wastewater treatment.

The Process

The process begins by adding an anaerobic bacteria catalyst seed from cow dung substrate to break down water pollutants. This is followed by bio-filtration and disinfectant stages, resulting in water, gas, and remnant sludge. ECOSTP has already treated an impressive 4 Billion Liters of water, saving 7,045 MWH of power and 5,636 tonnes of coal compared to traditional STPs. Additionally, the solution boasts 20% lower capital expenditure and over 90% lower operating costs.

Recognition and Impact

The technology was featured at the 8th World Water Forum in Brasilia in 2018 and has been selected as a Best Practice case study for the United Nations ESCAP.
